looking glass by seperis

Everything changed the night the meteors came.

Warnings for drug use and a quasi-incestuous relationship.  This is one of those fics that sticks with you a long long time after you first read it.  This fic is compiled wonderfully and it’s a beautifully ruthless piece, really well done.

fruit on offer by ristrettoette

You can’t grow oranges in England.

It takes a lot of skill for me to fall in love with a style like this because it’s so easy to tip over into overwrought language and become so obsessed with metaphor that the arc of the story gets lost under the distracting writing.  But there’s something about this style—like the author’s settled comfortably into her cadences and choice of words without feeling the need to impress.  It’s lovely and brings in fragmented images perfectly to give a sense of a whole that I can’t fully articulate but understand nonetheless.  Really impressive. <3

five times a jumper was ugly, one time it was hideous by jezebelgldstn

John keeps receiving lots of ugly jumpers from Sherlock as presents, for birthday, Xmas etc. John wears them regardless.

This is seriously just too charming!  Relentlessly fun and adorable! <33

upon the removal of a finish line by asongofsixpence

And it’s sad because what John doesn’t know is this:
It was never a suicide note. It was a love letter.

Between the clean writing and gorgeous lyricism and lines that are like a punch to the gut with exactly how right the author got it, I can’t recommend this fic enough.  I’m already a sucker for the pining trope so add in the beautiful writing and I literally just can’t get enough.  <3  Really really well done!

knees and necks by anonymous

prompt: I’d like to see John and Sherlock accidentally find each other’s erogenous zones, I was hoping for something uncommon (I’d prefer ears, neck, hips, etc. but pretty much whatever you find easiest to work with). And not realizing the effect it’s having on the opposite person until things have gone too far.

Maybe Sherlock deduces John’s most sensitive spots by the way he stands or something. Maybe John is checking Sherlock over for some medical excuse.

Lovely fill—unexpectedly hot for such a short piece. :) <33

fourteen black pennies by peevee

Two Englishmen, one evil Scottish poltergeist, fourteen corpses and a lot of whisky.

This fic is utterly charming!  A fun casefic with extremely sharp dialogue that still somehow manages to pull in loads of tension between Sherlock and John.  Really well done! <33

our hearts were little stones by sassiarty

It’s Sherlock who’s on the other side of the door.

John’s first thought is that he’s going crazy. Why else would he be seeing Sherlock right now? But as he stares for too long, slowly, differences start to appear. This man is shorter than Sherlock, his complexion is far worse, and his hair is red. Possibly the biggest difference of all is the huge smile plastered across his face. Even when he was smiling, Sherlock never seemed to radiate so much joy, especially over something as trivial as meeting a new person

Okay so I usually try not to rec fic on this blog that’s associated with me out of fear of bias or whatever but in this case my Martin feelings override that particular impulse for me.  Perfect characterization with a killer ending!  Highly recommended. <33

alternate endings by cathedral_carver

When you’re the writer, you’re in bloody charge for once. Aren’t you?

This is a really unique concept with mixed prose/playwriting that I don’t think I’ve ever seen before—and it works wonderfully with the concept of the fic itself.  I think that very few authors can pull off repeating sections without it becoming overbearing but it was perfect in this instance.  The fictional (real?—the blurring of reality and fiction is gorgeously done) conversations between John and Sherlock are fantastic.  Really well done. <33

disentanglement by rageprufrock

After the abject shitshow of Palo Alto, Eduardo’s plans are to stop proving his father right about all his life decisions, shut up, graduate, and keep abusing the slow-healing wound from Mark’s knife in the back until all the scar tissue is numb from dead nerve endings.

This might actually be my favorite fanfic out of the ones I’ve read recently.  But I mean, it’s Rageprufrock so I doubt anyone is surprised, haha.  I fall head over heels for writing that’s fast-paced and smarter than me, writing that throws me out of my element and shows me something new with all the obvious passion and expert details that captures the moment exactly.  It’s hard to balance the line between getting the tone serious enough and being too serious—especially for a fic about living with the mistakes you’ve made and moving on—but this piece does it perfectly, capturing both depression and levity in one deft swoop.  Gorgeous and perfect—I really don’t have words to capture how much I love this.

When Sherlock comes back, John isn’t there

Holy shit, can you say heartbreaking?  Beautifully understated and cutting in so few words.
