we share our mother’s health by tigrrmilk

“I didn’t ask for you to do this,” Steve says, as he cleans Bucky’s back, a few minutes before Steve’s mother will come in and take over. And no, this, this is the most offended Bucky has ever been, because he knows, and nobody needs to tell him what he should or shouldn’t do because he knows, he’s always known.

I’m perpetually fascinated by fics that are lost in chronology, that skip around to convey a specific sort of dreamy atmosphere that works perfectly with the story being told.  This piece is gorgeously detailed and beautifully written and I feel like I could get lost in this universe. <3

steve rogers at 100: celebrating captain america on film by eleveninches, Febricant, hellotailor, M_Leigh, neenya, & tigrrmilk

“Heil Hydra,” the enemy agent shouts.

“Heil this, motherfucker,” says Captain America, shooting off a rocket.

Steve and Bucky find out Hollywood has been busy since they went away. A historical survey, including but not limited to: one set of exploded genitals, a brief interlude in France, Mel Gibson and other masterworks of casting, eight Academy awards, several dinosaurs, and something Tony Stark has ominously dubbed “the masterpiece.” Art included.

THERE ARE SO MANY AMAZING THINGS ABOUT THIS FIC THAT I CAN’T EVEN BEGIN TO LIST THEM ALL BUT I HAVE TO SAY MY FAVE IS CHANNING TATUM AS CAPTAIN AMERICA AND JGL AS BUCKY.  EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS IS AMAZING AND I LAUGHED THE ENTIRE WAY THROUGH.

Bucky makes a friend.

This is so cute, I WANT TO LIVE IN THIS UNIVERSE.  Wonderful voice, charmingly done, I love it. <3333

“Everyone is conspiring against me,” Steve laments, and Bucky pats his cheek.

“Poor baby,” he mocks. “Do you need me to protect you from the mean people on the internet?”

Steve sniffs self-righteously. “Yes.”

This is adorable as hell and I found myself grinning and laughing aloud at parts.  Cute cute cute cute. :))))))))))

She can see Barnes in the corner of her eye, though she doesn’t think he can tell she’s looking at him. He wouldn’t be wearing that face if he could—it’s his whole heart right there, written out in his expression as he watches Steve hold her.

I’ve read this so many times because it hurts so much in such a tiny space of words I can’t stop marveling at how it manages to do that.  Plus, I absolutely adore Peggy in this. :D

the sirens and the thunder by legete

“Hide that,” he says, forcing the words out past every instinct. “As well as you can, all right? Before morning.”

Steve stares at him blankly, like he needs a moment to work this out, then swallows once, sharply. “What’s your name?” he asks at last—asks as he stands there with the pelt in his hands.

And oh, he thinks suddenly, what is his name? He can’t speak it, not with this mouth, he can’t sing it into the air like he can in the ocean. He just shakes his head; like his nakedness, it’s something he can’t explain. Steve nods, just nods, his eye swelling shut and blood drying on his shirt collar, and says “we’ll figure it out.”

(An AU where Bucky is a young selkie who is accidentally called to Steve and ends up staying around to help this poor, wretched kid not die.)

This is everything I want out of a gorgeous AU—the way that Bucky and Steve fit together in this universe, the way that the fic spans from WWII to the modern era—everything is perfect.  I love it.

everyone in this room got here somehow (and everyone in this room has to leave) by drytherivers

You do not waste time mourning his death.

You never did, really. You are far too intelligent for grief.

I love fics that out of chronological order and watching the way that they build up to a specific moment.  This one is sparse and beautifully in character—utterly gorgeous. <3

[AU where Bucky never fell.] They win the war. Steve and Bucky come home and deal with their feelings.

I’m a sucker for pining and this was absolutely beautifully conveyed.  I’m in love with all the quiet details here, the slow sort of devastation that burns from the inside out.  Gorgeously done. <3

a mirror, dimly by indigostohelit

On some forgotten roof in Leningrad, with the sky the color of sodium and the streets grey with dirty snow, the Captain shakes out his wrist like it’s hurting him. You toss a knife in the air so you can watch it catch the light, search your Captain’s face for something you don’t quite know the name of.

The wind smells like metal. Winter’s coming.

Or, the universe where both Bucky and Steve fell from the train.

Gorgeous, gorgeous writing.  As always, I’m impressed by anyone who can pull off poetic prose and manage to make it look so effortless in the act.  I think the thing I loved most about this was the cyclic nature of this piece, the surreal tone that conveyed a sense of inevitability.  Really well done.

but hey you’re all right by beardsley

'This is not my fault,' Tony lies. 'It was supposed to be a joke! Christ.'

'Thanks to your joke,' says Coulson, 'we now have a code three-four-delta, with the variable being a Russian immigrant. We're checking his background right now, but it might take a while. Meanwhile, I suggest you civilian-proof the Tower. If any SHIELD intelligence is compromised, I will hurt you.'

Yes, this is the story where the Winter Soldier is a Russian mail-order bride. Everything goes about as well as you’d expect.

So the day after I watched the new Captain America movie, I went and pretty much inhaled the entirety of beardsley’s entire works list in this fandom so we can probably all expected a few more fics from this author later on.  I remember starting to read this while waiting at the bus stop, then not being able to put it away and trying to surreptitiously read it while being hugely paranoid that other people could read it over my shoulder but not caring because it was Just That Good.  Clean writing, beautifully understated.  Love it. <3333
